ABOUT LAND ROVER
The Land Rover name was first used by Rover for the Land Rover series that was launched in 1948.
This series developed into a brand that now encompasses a whole range of 4 wheel drive cars. These include; the Range Rover, the Defender and the Discovery, just to name a few.
The Land Rover marque has been owned by many different companies over the years. The first being of course, the Rover Company.
It is now owned by Tata Motors, an Indian motoring company. But in its life time has also been owned by the Leyland Motor Corporation, British Leyland and Ford.
The original design for the Land Rover began in 1947 by Maurice Wilks. Wilks was the chief designer at the Rover Company at the time. The design may have been influenced by the Jeep and indeed the prototype was built on a Jeep chassis and axles.
The colour choices for Land Rover were dictated by the military surplus supply of cockpit paint that they had to work with. Early examples of Land Rover’s came in many different colours. Well, many different shades of green any way.
Land Rover, as an individual company, has existed since 1978. Before this, it was a product line of the Rover Company which was then absorbed into the Rover-Triumph division of British Leyland.
The Land Rover placed its name into the history books with some of its early models that are military based. If you like to learn about the history of Land Rover in the military then please explore our website further.
